What is a Q-PAC Fan?
A Q-PAC Fan is a multimotor plenum fan that combines multiple motorized impellers with a patented fan controller and an adaptive custom frame to operate as a single fan.
Is a Q-PAC Fan a “Fan Array”?
No, the Q-PAC Fan is a fan. A fan array is traditionally made up of multiple fans, each of which would be connected back to an external control panel and controlled directly by the BMS or a separate controls architecture. Although the Q-PAC Fan has multiple centrifugal Motorized Impellers that move air similar to Fan Arrays, the Q-PAC Fan communicates, performs, and is controlled just like a single fan.
Why use Q-PAC Fan instead of an AC Blower or a Traditional Fan Array?
The Q-PAC Fan offers distinct advantages over both AC Blower + VFD combinations and traditional Fan Arrays. Both of those options carry with it complexities & downsides that the Q-PAC Fan was designed to overcome.
AC Blowers + VFDs boast simple controls and operation, but heavily lack on the reliability aspect. As soon as your large blower goes down, it can be costly and time consuming to get it back up and running, not to mention the perpetual greasing, belt replacement, and shaft alignment.
Traditional Fan Arrays combat this by having inherent redundancy, reducing the damage caused if one of the fans goes down. The downside is the complexity that arises when you have multiple air movers. The installation, control, wiring, and specialized parts make these fan arrays far from simple.
The Q-PAC Fan can ship assembled direct to an AHU manufacturer or as a knocked down variant, with each part of the Q-PAC Fan being hand carried to the install location. Only an impact driver is needed to assemble the frame, motorized impellers, and fan controller. The Q-PAC Fan has an integrated controller that acts as the brain of the product. Out of the box, the Q-PAC Fan includes the pre-assembled motor harnessing that connects all motors to the controller, no field wiring required to each motor. The only connections required are to the Fan Controller which contains the controls.
With multiple motorized impellers and a single interface for controls, the Q-PAC Fan provides the reliability of having multiple motors with the simplicity of connecting with a single fan.
What comes with a Q-PAC Fan?
The Q-PAC Fan comes with 1-9 motorized impellers, 1-9 motor harnesses, interlocking frame panels, 1 patented fan controller, all required installation hardware, and electrical, installation, and user guides.
Is there a warranty for the Q-PAC Fan?
Yes, the Q-PAC Fan comes with a 5-Year parts warranty for all components.
Does the Q-PAC Fan meet the required safety standards?
Yes, the Q-PAC Fan is a UL 60335-2-40 Recognized Component.
What application is the Q-PAC Fan best in?
The Q-PAC Fan is designed for commercial comfort cooling applications in new air handlers, existing air handlers, or even in retrofit situations.
What airstream sizes can the Q-PAC Fan be?
A single Q-PAC Fan can be configured to be between 27.0” – 150.0” W and 25.0” – 140.0” H. Larger applications can combine multiple fans or custom solutions.
What tools do I need for installation?
Only an impact driver with hex sockets is needed for full Q-PAC Fan installation.
How will the Q-PAC Fan arrive on site?
The Q-PAC Fan can arrive assembled direct to an AHU manufacturer or directly to a project location knocked down on pallets. One pallet will contain the frame panels and the others will contains the motorized impellers. A standard forklift is capable of carrying all palletized components.
How does the Q-PAC Fan mount inside of the airstream?
If there is an existing mounting flange at the install location, then the Q-PAC Fan frame should be mounted directly to that flange using the pre-punched holes on the panels. If no pre-existing mounting flange is present, use the optional Perimeter Angle that can be supplied. This acts as the adapting component from the Q-PAC Fan to the internal surface of the install location.
How many motors can a Q-PAC Fan have?
A single Q-PAC Fan can contain up to 9 motorized impellers as standard.
How heavy is a Q-PAC Fan?
Due to the Q-PAC Fans dynamic sizing, the weight of the fan varies greatly depending on the specific layout. The fan can be as little as 85 lbs. for small configurations or as heavy as 1200 lbs. in its largest. These weights would be the final install weight.
Does the Q-PAC Fan fully seal the airstream?
Yes, the Q-PAC Fan can be tailored to specific dimensions and completely seals the airstream.
What connections are required for a Q-PAC Fan?
Only 2 connections are required to operate the Q-PAC Fan are a 0-10V speed signal and a 208V/3~/60Hz OR 480V/3~/60Hz power supply. For advanced operation and communication, the fan can communicate via MODBUS to an external controller.
What power supply is required?
208V/3~/60Hz or 480V/3~/60Hz.
Is the wiring to each motor included?
Yes, the harnesses containing the power, control, and pressure connections are included as standard with the Q-PAC Fan. These harnesses simply plug into a port on the Fan Controller on one end and the Motor Harness on the other. No termination of wires required.
What is the MCA of a Q-PAC Fan?
The exact MCA will vary depending on the Q-PAC Fan model. The Q-PAC Fan can have up to 95A MCA as standard.
What motor technology does a Q-PAC Fan use?
The Q-PAC Fan leverages Ultra-Premium Efficiency EC Motors for its motorized impellers.
What is the Q-PAC Fan Controller?
The Q-PAC Fan controller, located within the airstream, is the point of connection between the Q-PAC Fan and the external system controls, which could be an existing device or a Q-PAC panel. The controller automatically distributes the control signal to each motor in addition to monitoring its run status and calculating the total airflow.
How does the Q-PAC Fan interact with a Building Management System?
The Q-PAC Fan communicates via MODBUS to an external control system.
Does the Q-PAC Fan communicate via MODBUS to each motor?
No, the Q-PAC Fan does not speak MODBUS to each motor.
What happens if a motor fails during operation?
If a motor fails during operation, the other motors will continue to run and the Q-PAC Fan Controller will communicate that there is a failed motor via MODBUS or its analog alarm relay. Depending on the control method used to modulate the fan, the other fans may ramp up to make up the lost airflow.
Are all of the motors running at the same speed?
Yes, each motor receives the same 0-10V modulation signal by default.
Does the Q-PAC Fan communicate its status?
Yes, there is an alarm relay available as well as a MODBUS data point communicating the Q-PAC Fan’s alarm status.
What happens if the Q-PAC Fan controller has a problem?
If there is a failure of the Q-PAC Fan controller that affects the integrity of the 0-10V modulation signal, a bypass is opened and the 0-10V signal from an external source is passed directly to the motors, bypassing the controller functionality.
What if I don’t have a BMS?
A BMS is not required to operate the Q-PAC Fan, all you need is a speed signal and a supply voltage.
Does the Q-PAC Fan measure the performance of each motorized impeller?
Yes, the Q-PAC Fan determines the static pressure that each motorized impeller creates. These values are converted to an airflow value and added together to obtain the fan’s total airflow.
How much airflow can a Q-PAC Fan produce?
The most powerful of Q-PAC Fans can generate over 90,000 CFM. If more airflow is needed, Q-PAC can offer its standard FS1 product which is an array of 2 or more Q-PAC Fans in order to surpass this 90,000 CFM.
How much static pressure can a Q-PAC Fan produce?
Standard Q-PAC Fans can produce up to 9” of Static Pressure.
What is the resiliency field on a Q-PAC Fan data sheet?
Resiliency is the percentage of the required airflow that can be met when there has been a motor failure. A resiliency greater than 100% would indicate that upon a motor failure, the required airflow could still be met.
Are Q-PAC Fans N+1?
If motor redundancy is required, Q-PAC Fans can be configured for motor redundancy. The redundancy is represented as the percentage of the designed duty point that can be obtained if a motor fails (Resiliency). A 100% resilient value would mean that with 1 motor failure, 100% of the design duty could be met.
Does the Q-PAC Fan have a backflow prevention device?
Yes, Q-PAC Fans can have backdraft dampers if required, but they are typically not recommended. Due to the speed at which a replacement motor can be shipped and replaced, the performance reduction caused by the dampers is usually not worth the trade-off of cost vs performance. If chosen, the dampers are gravity activated and do not require actuating. Expect a minimum of 0.2” pressure drop.
What happens when a motor fails?
When a motor needs replacing, simply unbolt it from the wall with an impact driver. If you have the spare motorized impeller on hand, place it on the ledge and put the bolts back in. If the spare motorized impeller is on order, the Backflow Prevention Plate can be installed in order to prevent backflow through the open slot.
What maintenance is required through the life of the Q-PAC Fan?
Motorized Impeller replacement is the only maintenance necessary.
